Fall is here!

So I admit I've been slacking on the blog lately ... where has the time gone?! It's already fall, and I love this time of year! Pumpkin is one of my favorite things (and flavors) in the entire world - I'm so excited it's the season for pumpkin pie, soup, muffins, and of course, COOKIES! If you're craving pumpkin too, let me know!

Fall also means football season (go GA Tech Yellow Jackets!), and of course, tailgating!! One of my favorite things about football (okay, maybe my #1 favorite thing!) is tailgating with friends and all the yummy food that goes along with it! Cookies always seem to make it to our tailgates - they're the perfect sweet snack to go along with all the great stuff from the grill and everything else!

Another great fall treat is cobbler. Of course it's delicious all summer, but it also reminds me of Thanksgiving! If you're local and you love Kudzu Cobblers, send me an email (info@kudzucookies.com) if you want to order a Thanksgiving cobbler this year. I'm not at the market this year, but I'm still baking!

Hope y'all are enjoying the beautiful crisp weather and all the treats that go along with fall! We certainly are!

Uganda!!!

That's right, Uganda! My husband and I are part of a team of about 25 people from our church who are heading to Uganda this summer to help build a school for the Watoto Orphanage! We are really excited to be a part of this trip - Watoto is an awesome organization for children in Uganda who have lost their parents to war or disease. Not only are the children cared for and their physical needs are met, but they live in a home in a family setting with a house mother and 7 other children so they learn how to respect their families and women. Watoto is dedicated to meeting the children's needs, showing them God's love, and teaching them to respect one another so that they may grow up to be effective, strong leaders who will make good decisions. Have you seen The Last King of Scotland? Watoto's goal is to prevent dictatorships like that from happening by raising compassionate, educated leaders in Uganda - pretty cool!

So what does this have to do with Kudzu Cookies?! Kudzu Cookies is sponsoring a fundraiser for the team! As you can imagine, the building materials for the school aren't free - in fact, they'll run about $17,000. From now until Father's Day, Kudzu Cookies will donate 100% of our profits towards the building materials for the orphange. What could be better than remembering Dad with a delicious cookie gift while supporting such a great cause? In addition, we are giving you the opportunity to help us too - with every cookie order, you have the option to donate an additional amount of money towards in the trip - just select the amount you want to give in the shopping cart. We really appreciate your help, but the children of Uganda will appreciate it even more!

To make sure your dad gets his cookies before Father's Day, please place your online order by Friday, June 12. We may be able to process Father's Day orders received after this date, but we can't make any promises. Thank you for your cookie orders and for your support for our trip!!

Happy New Year and a late Merry Christmas!

Happy 2009 and a late Merry Christmas! Where did all the time go?! It seems like just last weekend we were bagging cookies and getting ready to go to the market in the morning. It's been over a month since the market ended, but Kudzu Cookies has stayed busy thanks to on-line orders and Christmas baking! Kudzu plans for the new year are still being finalized, so stay tuned for updates.

We hope you all had a wonderful holiday season with your loved ones. Christmas is always a special time for me as it's my family's all-time favorite time of year! I have many warm memories of Christmas as a child and still enjoy the traditions we started so long ago. Christmas is also a special time for Kudzu Cookies since many of my best holiday memories are of times with my mom in the kitchen, often baking or decorating cookies. This year my gingerbread house even won the family contest (sorry, Nick, the UF house took 2nd!). I hope you enjoyed your family's holiday traditions this year too or maybe started a new one!

From our home to yours, wishing you all a very happy new year (hopefully one blessed with lots of cookies!)!

I entered my peanut butter cookies in the Del Ray cookie bake-off last week in the final First Thursday of 2008 (September 4), and they won Best Looking Cookies! Check it out at visitdelray.com. It's so fun to be a part of the friendly community where I sell my products--I love meeting all of you Del Ray residents at the market and then seeing you around the neighborhood too. Hope to see you this weekend!

Summer's over already?!

I can't believe this weekend is Labor Day, and the end to summer (yes, I'm aware that the season does not end officially for three more weeks, but it may as well be over on Labor Day). Kids start back to school (I've already had a week of classes) and the days are already getting shorter. But, with the end of summer comes the fall--such a beautiful time of year! Fall also means apple pie (or cobbler!), Thanksgiving, and all things pumpkin! Look out for some new fall flavors from Kudzu Cookies at the Del Ray market. Now there's something to look forward to despite the end of a great summer!

Knowledge Management

This summer I'm learning about Knowledge Management as part of my MBA coursework. So what does knowledge management (KM) have to do with running a cookie business?? Plenty, I've found out! Although KM is usually associated with larger organizations where lots of people have different skills and information must be properly recorded and stored so it can be shared, it's also important for small shops like Kudzu Cookies.

Recently in class we did an exercise where we used the Zack framework to analyze a knowledge problem using a personal example. I used the problem of determining how many cookies of each variety to bake in order to maximize profits. This is more complicated than it sounds because there are many factors that affect weekly sales at the market. Weather, competing events (think Old Town River Festival, Del Ray music festival, etc), holidays (for example, many people travel on 4th of July), and the economy all play a role. Unfortunately these events are outside of my control. What I can control is the quality of my products and the number that I bring of each kind. Using the Zack framework, I analyzed what I must know (how many cookies to prepare each week), what I must do (bake the appropriate number of each product), what I can do (diligently record each week's sales along with external circumstances such as weather etc, ensure quality products are delivered each week, survey customers for what they like, listen to customers' comments, etc), and what I already know (what are typically my best sellers). Using this framework, I've realized that even though it's not possible to accurately predict--with certainty--what will sell each week, there is a lot more that I can do, although it may be time consuming. I wonder what helpful things I'll learn from project management and negotiations in the fall!
